Late last week Evergreen staff and Cascades to Sound Chapter board members met with delegations from the Backcountry Horseman of Washington and the Washington State Department of Natural Resources to meet one another, and talk about how we can best share a couple of trails coming from the new Tiger Summit parking lot (opening soon).
Both Iverson and the Connector Trail have historically been open to equestrian use, but having no parking for trailers, these trails haven't seen hooves in many years. The great majority of Tiger's trails remain MTB only.
The new lot features ample parking for equestrians, and opens better access for them to get to the South Tiger Mountain trails to the east.
Once the lot opens we can expect to see them return to this area. Please reserve the lowest lot for horse trailers only; if you see them parked there, be aware you might come across them on the trails open to equestrian use.
It is worth noting that this project scored high with the grants that helped fund it in large part due to the equestrian inclusive design. With the DOT right of way (or the Parking Lot of Lakes) being gone in the next couple of seasons, this new lot is timely and necessary.
If you're new to encountering horses on a trail, the best bet is to be conservative. Dismount your bike or put a foot down, say "Hi" to the horseback rider, and wait for guidance. They're pretty great animals, but a spooked or nervous horse is a hazard for both the rider and you.
